THE FIRST COMMANDMENT
In response to the question about the first of the commandments, Jesus says:"the first is, hear, o Israel: the Lord our God is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these" (Mk 12:29-31). The Apostle St. Paul reminds us of this:"he who loves his neighbour has fulfilled the law... Any other commandment are summoned up in this sentence: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law" (Rome, 13:8-10). Jesus makes love the "new commandment". By loving one another, we imitate the love of Jesus which we ourselves receive." This is my commandment: That you love each other as I have loved you" (Jn.15:9) Jesus died out of love for us. He asks us to love even our enemies, to make ourselves the neigbour of those furthest away.
"A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; that as I have loved you, you also love one another" Jn.1334).
